OUTENIQUA CHOO-TJOE STEAM TRAIN

The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe is a train that travels between George and Knysna, offering tourists a unique experience on a luxury steam train. The train stops at a lot of towns and small little places between Knysna and George, enabling tourists to see the beauty of South Africa, and some interesting museums and historical towns.

The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe is the last remaining steam train in Africa that is continually operated and carries passengers. The train travels a scenic route of 67 kilometres through the beautiful garden route. The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe winds through some amazing scenery that cannot be seen from the road ,and provides scenes for some awsome photography. Forests, hills covered with ferns, lakes, streams and the Knysna lagoon. Tunnels and cuttings are not excluded and provides an awesome and picturesque view of the true South African beauty.

This unique steam train departs daily from George to Knysna in the morning, and back from Knysna to George in the afternoon.

The railway was opened around 1928 and was declared an official passenger line, and a preserved line in 1992. At the moment, the train carries an estimated 115000 passengers every year, of which 70% are tourists from other countries.

This is truly a unique experience not to be missed to see some of the best in Africa.

When you travel on the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe from George to Knysna, you can overnight at the Knysna Queys where you receive a warm, hearty welcome, in the heart of the Garden Route. There is so much to be seen and to do in Knysna, that you can overnight one or two nights and still not have seen everything by the time you get back onto the train going back to George.
